Comment #13, October 14, 2010:  Oh my god. It's breathtaking. Exquisite. I've just begun and am savoring every page. Where did this come from? I receive inspiration and write, but not fiction. I would love to know how this came to you. I hope you won't be seduced into movie-dom, nothing could do it justice.

Comment #12, October 14, 2010:  I heard you on NPR and chose "The Bells" for my book club. I loved your book. We will have a great discussion next month for sure. I'll look forward to your next!

Comment #11, September 30, 2010:  I cannot tell you how much I loved this book!! I had the hardest time getting back to reality while I was reading it! The writing was superb; the story was so engaging I could hardly put it down. My only disappointment was to find that the author had only this book and an honors thesis in print!!! I cannot wait for your next work. Bravo, bravissimo!!!!!!

Comment #9, September 9, 2010:  It was a luminous and serene evening and I was walking towards my car, reading the last few pages of a manuscript. Suddenly I bumped into somebody. "Oh, sorry," I mumbled. Then I realized I was apologizing to a parking meter. Readers, beware: that's what happens when you'll read THE BELLS. Everything around you will lose its meaning. You'll forget to eat and sleep. You'll be over there, inside the story, high up in the Swiss mountains, in a magical Vienna, inside an imposing and mysterious abbey. You'll laugh and cry, suffer and hope, quiver and sigh. You'll need to know how it ends and then you'll never want to end it. As William Styron said "You live several lives while reading a book." I certainly did with this book.

Comment #8, September 9, 2010:  I just finished THE BELLS and loved it! This book is so beautifully written that the words simply sing out. Richard Harvell invokes your sense of hearing so you can listen along with Moses as he journeys through life, marveling not only at the sounds of bells, but of the shuffles, scuffles and other nuances of the world around him. Aside from the rich, full writing, the story is at once heart-wrenching and joyful - an aching love story that is captivating and heart-breaking. The cast of characters - largely big-hearted misfits and misdirected souls - comes alive on every page. I enjoyed every note!

Comment #7, September 8, 2010:  I loved it! It's a quick and engrossing read because every chapter takes you into wildly different directions, and at every turn of a corner you're entertained through and through. The Gargoyle and Perfume are definitely great comps, and maybe Carlos Zafon for the atmosphere, and Dan Brown could only wish his characters were as juicy and fleshed out as these ones. Finally I liked it because it was a serious love story without taking itself too seriously - it was just a wild ride!

Comment #6, September 8, 2010:  I spent the morning and a good part of the afternoon with Moses, and I have to say I am in love. With Moses of course, but also with the great mother bear Nicolai. Mr. Harvell is that rare writer who can immerse you completely in his world within a few pages. The Bells is completely compelling, and the comparison to The Gargoyle struck me immediately - it is the same kind of completely original story and has the same nail-biting narrative pacing.

Comment #5, September 8, 2010:  What can I say about this book? I fell in love with the writing and tone of the book immediately. Can't believe it was written by such a young, first time novelist. The writing, imagination it must have taken, and the universally human insights throughout speak to a writer who must surely be further along than him! I felt truly transported to another world. The story is full of enduring archetypes, magical strokes of luck (good and bad) and the pathos of young and unrequited love. Not to mention the castrati angle and the love and expression of an ancient source of pleasure, music. Great characters all-around from the 2 monks and the abbot to Moses' one love and her own family, esp the mother. I could visualize every character in this book as I read it - it really is a masterful painting-like depiction of another time and place that is only too recognizable in the humanity (and inhumanity) of it all.
